I JUST WENT OUTSIDE WEARING MY CRUSH THE PATRIARCHY T-SHIRT AND A GUY CALLED ME OVER TO SAY HE LOVED IT AND THEN WENT “I’VE NEVER HEARD OF THEM BUT IT’S A GREAT SHIRT” AND THAT WAS WHEN I REALIZED THAT THIS GUY FULL-OUT MISTOOK A CLEAR-CUT STATEMENT ABOUT BRUTALLY DISMANTLING THE OPPRESSIVE POWER STRUCTURE OF MALE-DOMINATED SOCIETY FOR BAND MERCH
Hey hey remember when Beyonce made “Why Don’t You Love Me?” and Sade made “Babyfather” and both videos subjectively occupied vintage femininity while deconstructing gender, race and class and white feminists were like ‘LOL that’s not new or interesting’ but Lana Del Rey makes a self-insert Kennedy fanfic video and suddenly they’re all writing theses about her eyeliner wings
The Bechdel Test backlash is definitely one of the weirdest things I’ve seen on Tumblr in the last few days.
I mean, how many of the people criticizing it realize who Alison Bechdel is (and that the ‘test’ is named after this woman)? Do you know the test came from a comic called Dykes to Watch Out For? Specifically, this comic and was originally called “The Rule”?
The test was never meant to judge if a piece of work was perfect, or even perfectly feminist. It just meant to say that women talk to each other. That our lives - social, romantic - do not always circle around men. That we can have conversations without thinking about men. That we shouldn’t be The Woman because there are many women! That no one woman can be taken as the representative of all women.
Some really great works don’t pass the test. Some really awful pieces do. But in the future, I’d like all works to pass the test and I think striving for that is important.
If you identify as a feminist I’m going to need you to stay at least 50 feet away from me, thanks.
A hoard of feminists all stand exactly 50 feet around you. Many other feminists slowly gather around, creating a large circle. You have said the wrong thing. You will never touch nor hear what these feminists have to say but they will always remain exactly 50 feet away from you in a large circle. Always. This is your fate.
